The Area Agency on Aging of Pasco Pinellas has been selected as one of 11 Innovation in the Health Care System grant recipients statewide for funding from the Florida Blue Foundation. The three-year, $300,000 grant will fund the AAAPP Senior Community Health Program, which strengthens linkages between medical and social service providers to improve access and health outcomes for under-resourced seniors.
“Area Agencies on Aging have been on the front lines of addressing the social determinants of health of low-income and under-resourced seniors for more than 40 years,” said Ann Marie Winter, Executive Director of AAAPP. “Historically, these services have not been systematically or strategically connected to the healthcare system, also serving these same seniors. By joining forces, we are addressing head on the circumstances and situations that cause the older adults in our community to decline physically and mentally and turn to the emergency room for assistance. Keeping them healthy and safe not only enhances their quality of life, but keeps our community from undue costs related to their healthcare.”
The program currently operates out of the Baycare Turley Family Health Center in Clearwater and the WellMed Clinic in St. Petersburg. Funding from the Florida Blue Foundation will equip AAAPP to serve more seniors in the current sites and expand into Pasco County, with a newly developed partnership with the Medical Center of Trinity, an HCA Hospital.

St. Petersburg, FL, December 18th– For the eleventh consecutive year, the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco – Pinellas (AAAPP) has received a monitoring report with no findings from the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (FL DOEA). AAAPP is the only Area Agency on Aging in the state of Florida to have more than three consecutive years of no findings.
Each year, FL DOEA staff performs tests of compliance with federal and state programs, contracts, and sub-awards at each local Area Agency on Aging. Secretary of Elder Affairs Richard Prudom noted AAAPP’s lack of findings for an eleven-year period was an “exemplary achievement” and encouraged the Agency to continue to share its processes and practices with other Area Agencies.
The lack of findings by the Department signals the Agency’s ability to provide high-quality services to a high volume of clients, despite the growing number of older adults and growing demand for services throughout Pinellas & Pasco. The success of AAAPP is due in large part to its longstanding community partnerships, including lead agencies Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services in Pinellas and Community Aging & Retirement Services (CARES) in Pasco. Together with the AAAPP, these organizations work tirelessly to ensure services are available to those in need.
The eleven Area Agencies on Aging across the state of Florida are local nonprofit organizations designated by state and federal authorities to coordinate services to keep older adults in their homes and communities safely. Area Agencies on Aging accomplish this by coordinating a network of services and supports for seniors, caregivers, and individuals with disabilities.
The Area Agency on Aging of Pasco – Pinellas serves as a trusted resource to advocate, educate and empower seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers which promotes independence, in partnership with the community. In 2018, AAAPP provided resources to more than 51,000 seniors in areas such as transportation, nutrition, caregiving, and more.

Area Agency on Aging of Pasco Pinellas Receives Award from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) for Fall Prevention Work
St. Petersburg, FL – The Area Agency on Aging of Pasco – Pinellas (AAAPP) announces that its Better Living for Seniors Pinellas Falls Prevention Coalition has been honored with a 2019 Aging Achievement Award by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a). The awards program is supported by WellCare Health Plans. AAAPP was among 48 local aging programs to receive honors at the n4a Annual Conference & Tradeshow, July 27-31, New Orleans.
The 2019 n4a Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards recognizes Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) and Title VI Native American aging programs that develop and implement cutting-edge approaches to support older adults, people with disabilities and their family caregivers. Among the selection criteria was the ease with which other agencies could replicate the program in their communities.
Better Living for Seniors Pinellas, an initiative of the AAAPP that works to engage local aging business partners, drives community-wide work to reduce the prevalence of falls through a Fall Prevention Coalition. Coalition initiatives include Denying Gravity, an innovative fall prevention comedy play put on by SAGES, a local volunteer senior acting troupe and local fire departments; a series of quarterly community provider symposiums; and a pilot program at two assisted living facilities to reduce unnecessary calls to EMS for falls assistance. Through these activities, Denying Gravity has reached more than 1,700 local older adults, and the two assisted living facilities involved in the EMS pilot program saw a 12% overall reduction in 911 calls in 2018. Additionally, a documentary called Saving Claire will premiere locally in September, before being released nationally on PBS.
“AAAPP is so fortunate to have a host of community partners so committed to ensuring optimal quality of life for older adults in Pinellas & Pasco,” said Ann Marie Winter, AAAPP Executive Director. “Falls are strongly associated with negative health outcomes for older adults, so the collaborative efforts to address falls risk is extremely important in keeping our community safe and healthy.”
