2010 Pinellas - Property Tax Exemptions for Seniors

An additional property tax exemption is available to qualified residents in twenty municipalities plus unincorporated Pinellas.
APPLICATION DEADLINE MARCH 1 This is an additional exemption benefit of up to $50,000. The amount varies by taxing district, and is based on the total household income received during 2009.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least one property owner is 65 years of age or older on January 1, 2010;
- The applicant qualifies for or is already receiving a Homestead Exemption;
- Total household income is $25,873 or less plus the cost of living increase to be determined in January. (NOTE: Social Security income is not included in that amount if a resident is NOT REQUIRED to file an income tax return);
WHAT APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE WHEN THEY APPLY:
- Proof of age (Driver License, Voter ID, or Birth Certificate)
- If required to file a Federal Income Tax Return: bring Form 1040 or 1040A for 2009.
- If not required to file a Federal Income Tax Return: bring documentation such as SSA 1099, or any other income documents for 2009.
IF AN APPLICANT IS RENEWING AN APPLICATION:
This exemption does not automatically renew like the homestead exemption does. If an applicant received the Senior Exemption last year he or she will be able to renew by mail this year. A renewal form will be mailed in January. If all income information is not available by the March 1 deadline, apply anyway! The deadline to supply income information is JUNE 1.
ONLY 2009 INCOME INFORMATION CAN BE ACCEPTED.
