Balance and Fall Prevention

Are you dizzy, unsteady or afraid of falling? Everyone has experienced a momentary feeling of faintness or lightheadness. When that sensation recurs often or is accompanied by the sensation of violent spinning, it can make your life miserable. Your symptoms my include:

  • Unsteadiness when walking,
  • Facial weakness or numbness,
  • Ringing in your ears,
  • Loss of coordination,
  • Hearing loss.

Constant dizziness can make it difficult to concentrate or remember things. Reading or writing for business or pleasure may become difficult. Joining in activities outside of your home may be hampered by unsteadiness. You may even be concerned that your faltering footsteps may be misinterpreted as the result of intoxication.

Dizziness can also take away your confidence within your home, making you afraid to move without the assistance of friends or family. The loss of independence can be frustrating and make you irritable.

Preventing Falls Among Seniors

A fall prevention program can help fortify your independence. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons estimates that 30% to 40% of all falls can be prevented. Falls are not just the result of getting older. Falls are usually caused by a number of things. By changing some of these things, you can lower your chances of falling. You can reduce your chances of falling by doing these things:

1. Begin a regular excercise program.

Excercise if one of the most important ways to reduce your chances of falling. Excercises that improve balance and coordination (like Tai Chi) are the most helpful. Ask your doctor or health care worker about the best type of excercise program for you.

2. Make your home safer.

  • Remove things you can trip over.
  • Remove small throw rugs or use double-sided tape to keep the rugs from slipping.
  • Keep items you use often in cabinets you can reach easily without using a step stool.
  • Have grab bars put in next to your toilet and in the tub or shower.
  • Use non-slip mats in the bathtub or on shower floors.
  • Improve the lighting in your home.
  • Have handrails and lights put in on all staircases.
  • Wear shoes tht give good suport and that have thin non-slip soles.

3. Have your health care provider review your medicines.

4. Have your vision checked.
